People conqured nature, space, made friends far away from Earth gravity and proved, the Homo sapiens is a lord of loggy universe.

This is how our big and friendly world looked in the mind of futurists from 30th.

There were no epidemics, as yet in the Renaissance Lui Mercie (the world’s first futurologist) predicted, that herbal bath will be curing any disease.

None were aftaid of being unemployed because of robots, as the robot was nothing but a human friend.

It was a wonderful world of future. but in the reality, it became just a lonely shadow of retrofuturism.

Nowadays we call all those dreams and fantasies, that people were building around the future - retrofuturism.

First futurology predictions were done yet in the Renaissance epoque.

They turned to be retro only in the 30th of the XX century. Futurism reached the peak of its fame in the 30th.

Then these fantasies were quite realistic plans for the nearest future.

today we call them retro fairytales. despite they never may come true, they don’t lose beauty.

Even now posters of Alberto Robido and Jan-Marque Cote can be seen in offices and homes. Flying cars piloted by people in traditional clothes of the XIX century and meetings with fantastic creatures make you feel a slight touch of nostalgia.

Just the same as when you are re-watching “Back to the Future” and “Blade Runner”. These movies are traditional examples of retrofuturism. Just like Fallout and BioShock games, they became iconic for the mysterious future reality.

What were retro-futurists dreaming about? Of cource, it was space, technologies and nature.

But the list of dreamy goals was even longer. The human was thinking about the city of the future, quick and cosy car that never stands in traffic jams.

In the USA - about the new Miami, in Moscow of XXth century about the communism on the whole Earth and feats in the name of science and technics.

As one of the most famous futurologists (who never agreed on having this status), karl marx was thinking on the way of social development.

Futurism was never framed with steels hands, holding teacups, wireless aircraft cabins and Moon resorts. It was built on the human wellbeing pillars.

Since in the world of the future, first of all, found pure happiness.

we must’ve never stopped dreaming. but first thoughts on the future were noted down in the xvIII century — when renaissance was facing its sunset.

Da Vinchi was building constructions of the first planes and military equipment, Mondino was writing the greatest work on the anatomy - simple people and great philosophers started looking behind the ragged curtain and studying a wonderful world behind the window.

That’s just how famous dawn in human history began.

The first futurist who came the fortune-tellers, but from the secular world was louis-sebastien mercier.

Not realizing it himself, Mercier set a trend for the future predictions for several centuries ahead.

And the trend was not to follow the evolutionary mind never accepting revolutions in these mental games.

The philosopher was thinking
about the development of medicine as well...
And it appeared to be poor.

The philosopher was thinking about the development

as well...
And it appeared

In 2440 all diseases were cured by the herbal bath.

People were living the same short life and death because the cold was quite normal. What can powerless people do to nature? However, people started giving birth to more people and building great cities.

The other thing is technological development, which depens only on people themselves.

In galleries of the 2440 year, you could’ve meet holograms and any sound was produced by a synthesizer (of cource Lui never called it this way, for him it was just a strange machine with levers and springs).

From the medicine and destiny of women, retrofuturism changed its focus to society and politics in the XIX century.

If in XVIII one of the main social issues was the big amount of death because of illnesses, troubles with women who started seeking freedom and technologies that were giving hopes to everyone, in XIX world already got first feminists, first effective tablets and even transport.

But along with industrialization philosophers of the XIX century met political and social crises.

The death of imperialism started knocking into the castle gates and the feeling

of great loss was flying over the streets longbefore the first world war.

That’s why thinkers made dreams of goverments and the destiny of society.
Among the most famous retro-futurists,we see Marx, Morris, Fourie and Bellam.

Carl was predicting
never-ending revolutions.
The government will be changing and only absolute socialism will be able to stop political disasters.

But it also will end one day and another regime will come, as society itself changes all the time and inequality only makes humans nature variability stronger, waiting when it will blow up with the palace coups.

Even now the believe that the world stands on the economic bases remains true. Revolutions and inequality also remain true to reality.

And even the dream of pure and absolute socialism may turn real under the gold and red Chinese banner.

nature, love and robots

If Netflix was about to make new thrilling sci-fiction TV series, it would’ve made over the futurology predictions of the 1930th. Sun raised above the world of science fiction and human felt themselves on the top of the world for the first time.

The victory in the First World War, the farewell to imperialism and the arrival of new states generated a massive surge of joy and filled hearts with hope.

Retro space rocket

After such sharp progress, the world has firmly accepted only one truth — a person can do everything!

He will conquer space, nature and society itself will become different. And these changes will happen as quickly as no one could have a dream.

Poster

but already in 30s, new powers of the future entered the arena and then both american and soviet futurists had to limit their dreams to ideological goals.

so, in america a picture of an ideal family has created: a contented dad with a push button, a mom with a golden curls, two happy children, a dog and a robot.

He will conquer space, nature and society it self will become different. And these changes will happen as quickly as no one could have a dream.

in the ussr, the family remained the same as always: mom, dad and several children.

Father worked at the plant, where has engaged in improving the weather stations, and mother and children were vacationing at the best resort in the world - on the Black Sea.

The futurists of that time believed that the whole world would be captured by communism and a huge statue of Lenin would stand in every city.

lenin

and if in the ussr of that time they dreamed of seeing statues of lenin everywhere, in america hunger remained the main fear.

Uncle Sam

After a strong baby boom, the population of a huge contry frantically calculated the reserves of resources on the planet and predicted starvation on earth.

At the same time, the futurists took up dreams of pills that suppress hunger and saturate the body. The man of the future no longer needed food.

The magic pills were the best solution.

by the way, everyone dreamed about the desire to see the world “big”

In the minds of people in the future, it was possible to call up through a videophone - but they must have had the size of a standard telephone booth.

The same about robots - a good helper could only be the size of a person, no less! Man conquered the weather and got rid of the threat of hunger in the future. And then he went into space.

in the 1930s, america and the ussr began to actively dream of space adventures

If Japan and China then drew fast trains on mono-wheels through the mountains, the powerful countries of the culture already communicated with the inhabitants of Jupiter and Neptune.

Moreover, the dreams of the people from different countries were completely the same: in them, a person flew to a well-known planet, boldly left the spaceship without even looking.

And everyone was happy with him. Eggplants on huge legs from Saturn, slugs from Jupiter, or warlike cats from Callisto - everyone knew that in this universe, man is king.

Problems could arise only on Titan, where one of the astronauts was devoured by a huge dinosaur. Probably dinosaurs took revenge.

mars poster

mars of course, the boldest
dreams were about
the moon, mars and venus —

In the future of that time, the Moon was already completely mastered by people - it was not possible to meet life on it, because it existed only for people, like a satellite of the Earth. Just a couple of glass domes and those who wish could already settle on the white planet.

By the way, the seas again poured into the huge lunar craters and now there were festivals on colorful ships.

venus

Ancient creatures that gave birth to the universe

lived on mars.

Perhaps, only them people treated with respect and slight apprehension. After all, they were warlike monsters, with wands in their hands and huge noses.

The appearance of a typical Martian was set by Hugo Gernsback in 1924 (his illustration was published on the pages of the world’s first fantastic magazine Amazing Stories). His monster had a very large chest, so he could barely breathe air in. The creature’s chest was covered with white fur, and its ears were larger than the head - to pick up sounds in the thin Martian atmosphere.

frogs lived on neptune.

Only toads, who did not even build houses, unlike the rest of the creatures in the galaxy, could survive on a planet covered in oceans.

The man did not greet them, he only took the red caviar, of which there was a lot on the planet. Gourmets were especially fond of flying there to taste fresh frog meat.

the man did not like to meddle on pluto - this is the land of bats.

They live in burrows and the entire planet is covered with pitch darkness. Therefore, a person always wore reinforced amour on Pluto and flew only when necessary.

huge slugs lived on jupiter and its moons because strong gravity pulled them to the earth...

...and only a slug with a large press could freely move around the planet. Man on Jupiter travelled only in a special car. This machine resembled a harvester, and slugs, which of course had never seen a harvester, were waiting for the arrival of a person with great impatience.

Then, in the world of colonization, space was for us just another attempt to seize power.

Only the centre of the earth remained a more unpleasant place.

It was still hot and there were huge spiders. It is difficult to get to the core of the planet, but the brave craftsmen were not afraid of spiders and the heat, because they protected the covers from the sewer manholes. Especial courage was given by fresh hits in huge headphones.

the last frontier

The last period in the history of modern retrofuturism was the 60-the 80s of the xx century.

image-2

Modern futurists call this time the brightest. After space exploration, the dreamers were unstoppable.

Predictions about the inhabitants of other planets have practicially dissappeared - science fiction writers began to dream of more - the end of the universe, the riddles of black holes and the transituon to another reality.

The main character at this time was Isaac Asimov, who, with his fantastic works, inspired not only ordinary people but also physicists of that time.

Blasters, flying cars, skyscrapers of incredible heights and the latesttape recorders interwined with the outfits of the 50s and the classic model of relationshops in minds of every dreamer.

After all, technology had to develop, and people stay the same - this is a prerequisite.

a good computer had to be big. And at the same time, it is desirable to occupy the whole room

Satire on this topic is perfectly represented in the film “Iron Sky”, where a Nazi from the Moon scornfully examines the iPhone and finally exclaims: “Well, is this a computer?”

Iron Sky Computer

gigantomania
also affected cities.

They all had to be covered with a large glass dome: firstly, to purify the air, and secondly, for protection (in case of a nuclear war).

Residents of one country no longer needed to fly somewhere far to the seas. Now everything could be received anywhere in the world.

Siberians rested on the paradise tropical shores of the northern Arctic.

After all, a dam had already been erected there, and now the cold currents simply did not reach the ground.

Nature silently underwent all charges, even the most radical ones.

With today's warming and plentful exhaust fumes, multilevel autocodes don't seem like a good idea, and neither are laser blasters. And “steampunk” and “dieselpunk”, which talk about the “future that we have been deprived of” are smeared with consolation rather than sadness about unfulfilled dreams.

Distant stars

And while a person was thinking about how to capture distant stars, The herbal bath did not help cure diseases.

Millions of lives were claimed by unlnow diseases and viruses that we did not know before. Under the ice of Antarctica, it is no longer possible to dig Uglegrad, because its ice began to melt, and the Arctic, even without dams, became warmer.

But this warmer did not seem to us more romantic.

both in America and Ussr,

Science fiction writers dreamed of complete control over nature.

The rivers could be turned back in the future, and Atlantropa could be built off the coast of Africa - the rebirth of Atlantis at the very bottom of the Atlantic Ocean

Today’s dreams

are not about
grabbing resourses
and winning
a political regime

We dream that all those species of animals and fish that we can admire will remain on the earth. That the glaciers will not elt, and the plants will not freeze due to the change of poles. That our 4 seasons will remain as they are and on other platinum, we will not make mistakes made on Earth.

We started buying fewer cars, recycling plastic and sorting waste. We started reusing products and hit meditation. As in science fiction films, the man abandoned technogenic development andwanted to live in harmony with nature.

The collapse of the Soviet Union and the Vietnam War put an end to the novel about a great future

Where man fearlessy conquered his own and other worlds. The man-made idyll never came, and the rivers still flowed as usual. Only the goverment changed, and people continued to grow poorer.
